A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

11 Aug 2014

This was a journey an apocalyptic post-fallout world in dark age of understanding towards the recovery of man’s glory, told through the eyes of members of the Order of Leibowitz. The Order’s patron was some martyr who died for the sake of preserving knowledge, and that mission is continued by the Order. Like the medieval dark ages, the order copies and recopies (and illuminates) manuscripts from the golden age of humanity, before the demon Fallout destroyed civilization.

I enjoyed the framing of the fall and rise of civilization in terms of religious doctrine. Although I may not agree with some of reasoning on a personal level, with respect to the story and characters, it was beautiful and meshed with the plot wonderfully.
